At the Edge of Chinatown tackles one of America's most pressing questions with heart and humor: how do we honor our heritage while becoming who we're meant to be? Created by Joe X. Jiang & Simon Tam of The Slants—the Asian American band known for their landmark Supreme Court case and socially impactful art—this musical fuses emo/pop punk energy with the story of three young Asian-Americans fighting to save their family restaurant in a gentrifying Chinatown. With the quirky warmth of Waitress, the irreverent heart of Book of Mormon, and the cultural richness of In the Heights, this show arrives at a moment when Asian-American stories are claiming center stage and historic Chinatowns are searching for new ways to thrive.

Grounded in real narratives from multigenerational residents and business owners through partnerships with the Portland Chinatown Museum, the work goes beyond the stage. The full theatrical performance features a working onstage kitchen, student matinees with curriculum materials, and collaborations with Chinatown restaurants to drive foot traffic and economic vitality. At the Edge of Chinatown offers an exciting, replicable model for how musical theater can breathe life into historic districts, bridge generations, and prove that the most powerful form of cultural preservation isn't freezing the past—it's reimagining the future together.
